Bayesian Decision Theory, the Maximum Local Mass Estimate, and Color Constancy

چکیده
Computational vision algorithms are often developed in a Bayesian framework. Two estimators are commonly used: maximum a posteriori (MAP), and minimum mean squared error (MMSE). We argue that neither is appropriate for perception problems. The MAP estimator makes insufficient use of structure in the posterior probability. The squared error penalty of the MMSE estimator does not reflect typical penalties. We apply this new estimator to color constancy. An unknown illuminant falls on surfaces of unknown colors. We seek to estimate both the illuminant spectrum and the surface spectra from photosensor responses which depend on the product of these unknown spectra. In simulations, we show that the MLM method performs better than the MAP estimator, and better than two standard color constancy algorithms. The MLM estimate may prove useful in other vision problems as well. IEEE Intl. Bayesian color constancy.
The problem of color constancy may be solved if we can recover the physical properties of illuminants and surfaces from photosensor responses. We consider this problem within the framework of Bayesian decision theory. First, we model the relation among illuminants, surfaces, and photosensor responses. Second, we construct prior distributions that describe the probability that particular illumin...
متن کاملComparison of Artificial Neural Network, Decision Tree and Bayesian Network Models in Regional Flood Frequency Analysis using L-moments and Maximum Likelihood Methods in Karkheh and Karun Watersheds
Proper flood discharge forecasting is significant for the design of hydraulic structures, reducing the risk of failure, and minimizing downstream environmental damage. The objective of this study was to investigate the application of machine learning methods in Regional Flood Frequency Analysis (RFFA). To achieve this goal, 18 physiographic, climatic, lithological, and land use parameters were ...
متن کاملColor constancy by combining low-mid-high level image cues
In general, computational methods to estimate the color of the light source are based on single, low-level image cues such as pixel values and edges. Only a few methods are proposed exploiting multiple cues for color constancy by incorporating pixel values, edge information and higher-order image statistics. However, expanding color constancy beyond these low-level image statistics (pixels, edg...
متن کاملEfficient Color Constancy with Local Surface Reflectance Statistics
The aim of computational color constancy is to estimate the actual surface color in an acquired scene disregarding its illuminant. Many solutions try to first estimate the illuminant and then correct the image with the illuminant estimate. Based on the linear image formation model, we propose in this work a new strategy to estimate the illuminant. Inspired by the feedback modulation from horizo...
متن کاملMaximum Entropy Spectral Models for Color Constancy
Earlier work showed that maximum entropy models can be used to represent surface reflectance spectra of Munsell patches. Here, we introduce a new approach to color constancy which is based upon that work. To our knowledge, all color constancy approaches employing spectral models use linear basis function representations for surface and illuminant spectra. This means that a set of basis function...
